Steve is leading the charge in trying to change the way tennis is taught. With his many years of experience in tennis and tennis-specific fitness he has managed to create a proven system that has turned out hundreds of sectionally, nationally, collegiate, and professionally ranked players. With Steve’s Tennis Systems you can become the best player you can be. Now that he has assumed the role as Director of Tennis at Mountainside Racquet Club, he is turning this facility into more than just a club, he is building an incredible environment that will allow you to be your absolute best.
Tom Clear, Director of Junior Developement
For over 25 years, Coach Tom has worked with ATP & WTA professionals, top rated college athletes and highly ranked national juniors. He also has a wealth of experience heading junior development programs at clubs such as:

Martin Alund, Director of High Performance
Martin Alund is from Mendoza, Argentina and he will be our Director of High Performance at MRC. Martin played on the ATP tour for many years, and he reached a career high ranking of #84 in 2013. During his career, he had wins over John Millman, Diego Schwartzmann, Jeremy Chardy, and former world #1, Lleyton Hewitt. In addition, Martin has played at the French Open and Wimbledon, and reached the Semi-Finals of the 2013 Brazil Open losing to Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
Shem Filipek, Master Pro
Shem Filipek, is a native of Bedzin, Poland and he is a former ATP ranked player in singles and doubles. Shem played his college tennis at (Division 1) Monmouth University and he led the team to the Metro Athletic Conference Championship in 2016 and 2017. He compiled an overall record of 56-39 while going an impressive 26-2 in league contests. Shem was an All-MAAC First Team - Second Singles selection in 2016 and a First Team choice in No. 1 doubles in 2016 and 2017. For the last two years, Shem has been the Head Coach at Wagner College. He led the team to and undefeated Northeast Conference record and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament in 2018.
Howard Sherman, Director of Age 10 and Under Tennis
Howard is the new up and coming pro here at MRC. He has been working with the Director of Tennis, Steve Ondish, on both his teaching and his own game for the past 10+ years and is ready to start bringing his knowledge to you. Howard does more than teach tennis at MRC and is also in charge of the website, racquet stringing, and much of the backend at the club. He has been the swiss army knife of MRC and a valuable part of our transition to new management. We are excited to see just how much Howard can bring to both the club and your game!
Ramy Rizk, Master Pro
Ramy is no stranger to the tennis world. After playing #1 at MIT and competing in the ATP Satellite Circuit he has learned exactly what it takes to make you a great tennis player. Ramy has 20+ years of tennis teaching experience and is currently teaching around Westfield and the neighboring areas. After working with Steve for longer than he cares to admit, he has a great understanding of the Director’s Tennis Systems. Ramy’s deep love for the game has allowed him to continually improve and learn as both a coach and a person and is eager to share with you what he has learned, including Steve’s Tennis Systems.
Bret Cadena, Fitness Trainer
Bret has been be doing sports specific training and personal training for nearly a decade. He grew up playing football and finished his playing career at the collegiate level. During his time as a trainer Bret worked under the guidance of a former NFL Strength and Conditioning coach. Bret brings his knowledge to MRC in hopes of giving the kids the best chance to reach their physical potential. Not only does Bret do the the fitness for the kids he does personal training as well. Bret is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer (C-PT). He works with kids and adults of all ages ranging from 7 years old to 80 years and anything in between. Focusing on balance, functional strength and basic weight training for older adults helps to improve their everyday life along with improving bone density and cardiovascular endurance.
