Steve is leading the charge in trying to change the way tennis is taught. With his many years of experience in tennis and tennis-specific fitness he has managed to create a proven system that has turned out hundreds of sectionally, nationally, collegiate, and professionally ranked players. With Steve’s Tennis Systems you can become the best player you can be. Now that he has assumed the role as Director of Tennis at Mountainside Racquet Club, he is turning this facility into more than just a club, he is building an incredible environment that will allow you to be your absolute best.

   Kai Heinicke, Assistant Tennis Director


Over the past 30 years Kai has accumulated an impressive resume in the tennis community as both a player and coach. Born and raised in Germany, Kai enjoyed seven years on the pro-circuit before establishing himself as the head coach of five tennis clubs, the professional coach for WTA players Anna-Lena Friedsam (WTA Ranking 47) and Marlene Weingärtner (WTA #36), and as a coach for multiple world-renowned players in the Bundesliga Men’s Club coached such as:

  • Jurgen Melzer (Highest ATP Ranking #8)
  • Dominic Thiem (Highest ATP Ranking #7)
  • Rainer Schuttler (Highest ATP Ranking #5)
  • Janko Tipsarevic (Highest ATP Ranking #8)

Now, Coach Kai is bringing his knowledge and expertise to our Mountainside Racquet Club where we know he will make a tremendous impact on all of our players!

Gary Wasserman – Tournament Director

Gary has been teaching tennis for over 25 years and has been a certified PTR tennis instructor since 2002 so he knows how to take your game to the next level. He is currently the tennis coach for both the boys and girls varsity tennis programs at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. He has excelled in this position and has managed to win a number of local awards including Tennis Coach of the year for Union County in 2007, 2012, and 2013. Gary loves teaching tennis not only for the competition but also for the social aspect of the game, allowing him to meet new and interesting people while giving him a chance to have a positive influence on their life.

Howard Sherman– Director of 10 & Under Tennis

Howard is the new up and coming pro here at MRC. He has been working with the Director of Tennis, Steve Ondish, on both his teaching and his own game for the past 10+ years and is ready to start bringing his knowledge to you. Howard does more than teach tennis at MRC and is also in charge of the website, racquet stringing, and much of the backend at the club. He has been the swiss army knife of MRC and a valuable part of our transition to new management. We are excited to see just how much Howard can bring to both the club and your game!

 VolleyFH  Ramy Rizk, Master Pro


Ramy is no stranger to the tennis world. After playing #1 at MIT and competing in the ATP Satellite Circuit he has learned exactly what it takes to make you a great tennis player. Ramy has 20+ years of tennis teaching experience and is currently teaching around Westfield and the neighboring areas. After working with Steve for longer than he cares to admit, he has a great understanding of the Director’s Tennis Systems. Ramy’s deep love for the game has allowed him to continually improve and learn as both a coach and a person and is eager to share with you what he has learned, including Steve’s Tennis Systems.








Tom Clear
For over 25 years, Coach Tom has worked with ATP & WTA professionals, top rated college athletes and highly ranked national juniors. He also has a wealth of experience heading junior development programs at clubs such as:

  • Gotham Tennis Academy, NY
  • Cunningham Tennis, Queens NY
  • Christopher Morley Tennis, Roslyn NY
Tom’s exceptional attention to detail in stroke production and his commitment to helping his students achieve their goals will be a tremendous asset to our community.
 Emma Taylor, Staff Pro
Emma is the newest up and coming teaching pro at MRC. She has worked with the Director of Tennis, Steve Ondish, since 2005 during which time she achieved the ranking of #9 in the Eastern section and played collegiate tennis at Emory University where she earned the rank of All-American. Emma has been teaching tennis for over 10 years and has been thoroughly enjoys introducing the game to MRC’s youngest students.  She is also in charge of racquet stringing, social media, and website maintenance.
